Have you ever wondered how photographers get that polished, consistent look across all their photos? The secret is rarely hours of manual editing. More often, it is a Lightroom preset: a saved recipe of editing settings that you can apply to any photo with one click.

If you are new to photo editing, presets are the fastest way to make your photos look professional. Whether you want warm and golden portraits, moody landscapes, or clean and bright wedding photos, the right preset gets you most of the way there in seconds. Then you can fine tune the result to match your taste.

In this beginner guide, you will learn exactly how to use Lightroom presets: what they are, what you need to get started, how to install them, how to apply them, and how to adjust them so your photos look natural instead of over edited. We will also cover the most common beginner mistakes and how to choose the best lightroom presets for portraits, landscapes, weddings, and night shots. There are plenty of free lightroom presets online to practice with, and when you are ready for more polished looks, affordable themed packs make it easy to build a consistent style.

What Are Lightroom Presets?

A Lightroom preset is a file that stores a complete set of editing adjustments: exposure, contrast, white balance, color saturation, tone curve, sharpening, and more. When you apply a preset, Lightroom copies all of those settings onto your photo at once. Think of it like an Instagram filter, but far more powerful and fully adjustable.

Presets come as small files. Older preset packs use the .lrtemplate format, while newer ones use .xmp files. Both work in Lightroom Classic on the desktop, which is what this guide covers. Presets for the Lightroom mobile app are a different format, usually DNG files, so if you edit on your phone, look specifically for lightroom presets for mobile rather than lightroom presets for desktop.

The key thing to understand is that a preset is a starting point, not a finished edit. Two photos shot in different light will react differently to the same preset. Learning to adjust a preset after applying it is what separates beginners from confident editors, and we will walk through exactly how to do that below.

What You Need Before You Start

You only need three things:

1. Adobe Lightroom Classic on a desktop computer. The steps in this guide are for Lightroom Classic, the desktop version photographers use most. The mobile and web versions organize presets differently.

2. A preset pack to install. Preset packs are sold as downloads containing .lrtemplate or .xmp files. Many stores offer free sample packs so you can practice before you buy anything.

3. A photo to edit. Pick a well exposed photo to start. Presets work best on photos that are already reasonably exposed; they cannot rescue a photo that is completely dark or blown out.

That is it. No extra software, no plug ins, and no advanced editing knowledge required.

How to Install Lightroom Presets in Lightroom Classic

Installing presets takes about two minutes. Follow these steps:

1. Download your preset pack and unzip the folder. You should see files ending in .lrtemplate or .xmp. If the files are still zipped, Lightroom cannot read them, so unzip first.

2. Open Lightroom Classic and switch to the Develop module. Click Develop at the top right of the window.

3. Find the Presets panel on the left side. Right click on the User Presets folder, or any folder where you want them, and choose Import.

4. In the file window that opens, navigate to your unzipped preset files. Select the .lrtemplate or .xmp files and click Import.

5. Your new presets now appear in the Presets panel, ready to use. Hover your mouse over any preset name to preview its effect on your photo before clicking.

If you ever want to remove a preset, right click its name in the Presets panel and choose Delete. Your original photos are never harmed by installing or deleting presets.

How to Apply a Preset to Your Photo

Once your presets are installed, using them is the easy part:

1. Select a photo in the Library module, then switch to the Develop module.

2. In the Presets panel on the left, hover over preset names to preview each look on your photo. This live preview is the fastest way to compare styles.

3. Click a preset name to apply it. Lightroom instantly copies all of the preset's settings onto your photo.

4. Not happy with the result? Press Ctrl+Z (Windows) or Cmd+Z (Mac) to undo, or pick a different preset. You can try as many as you like. Your original file is never changed, because Lightroom edits are non destructive.

Tip: press the backslash key to toggle a before and after view. This comparison shows exactly what the preset changed and helps you judge whether the look suits the photo.

How to Adjust a Preset So It Looks Natural

A preset applied at full strength can look too intense, especially on photos shot in different lighting than the preset was designed for. Here is how to dial it in:

Amount slider: In recent Lightroom versions, the Presets panel has an Amount slider. Drag it down to fade the preset's effect. If your version does not show it, adjust the individual settings below instead.

White balance: This is the single most important adjustment. Use the Temp and Tint sliders in the Basic panel so whites look white, not orange or blue. Fixing white balance alone can transform a preset from strange to stunning.

Exposure: If the preset made your photo too dark or too bright, move the Exposure slider until the overall brightness looks right. Then fine tune Highlights and Shadows to recover detail.

Whites, Blacks, Clarity, and Texture: Small moves here add polish. Lower Clarity slightly for softer portraits; raise Texture a touch for crisper landscapes.

The golden rule: the preset does 80 percent of the work, and your adjustments do the final 20 percent. That last bit of tweaking is what makes the edit look like yours.

7 Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

1. Using the preset at full strength every time. Almost every preset benefits from reducing the Amount or softening a few sliders.

2. Skipping white balance. A preset cannot guess the lighting of your photo. Always correct Temp and Tint first.

3. Stacking multiple presets. Applying one preset on top of another usually creates a muddy mess. Pick one look per photo.

4. Using a portrait preset on a landscape. Presets are tuned for specific subjects. Skin tone presets can turn skies green, and landscape presets can make skin look sunburned.

5. Cranking saturation. If colors look neon, pull back Vibrance or Saturation. Rich color beats loud color.

6. Collecting hundreds of presets. Beginners often download every free pack they find, then feel overwhelmed. Learn five to ten looks deeply instead of skimming a hundred.

7. Never comparing before and after. Use the backslash key often. If you cannot tell the preset improved the photo, try a lighter touch or a different look.

How to Choose the Right Preset Style

Different photos need different moods. Here is a quick cheat sheet:

Portraits: Look for presets described as warm, natural, or clean. They should keep skin tones creamy and realistic. Avoid heavy green or blue tints, which make people look ill.

Landscapes: Choose presets that enrich blues and greens and add gentle contrast. A touch of Dehaze can make mountain and ocean scenes pop. Be careful not to push saturation so far that the scene looks fake.

Weddings: Soft, airy, romantic presets are the classic wedding look: lifted blacks, gentle highlights, and slightly desaturated greens. Consistency matters here, since wedding galleries contain hundreds of photos that should feel like a set.

Night photos: Pick presets designed for low light. They usually lift shadows gently and control noise. Apply them lightly, then reduce any color noise with the Detail panel if needed.

The best lightroom presets for you are the ones that match the photos you actually take. If you shoot mostly portraits, invest in a great portrait pack rather than a giant bundle of looks you will never use. Many photographers start with free lightroom presets to learn, then move to premium lightroom presets for a more refined, consistent style.
