How to Shoot Better Video With Just Your Smartphone
Your phone is already a good enough camera to make videos people love. The camera in your pocket beats the expensive gear of ten years ago, so what separates a great phone video from a shaky mess is technique, not the phone.
Start by cleaning the lens. A fingerprint smudge is the number one reason phone videos look soft and hazy. One quick wipe before every shoot makes a bigger difference than any filter.
Next, lock your focus and exposure. Tap and hold on your subject until the lock icon appears. This stops the camera from pulsing in and out every time your hand moves, which is the fastest giveaway of an amateur shoot.
Use the grid lines and place your subject on one of the four crossing points, the classic rule of thirds. Centered subjects feel like a video call; off-center feels like a movie.
Keep the phone steady. Hold it with both hands, tuck your elbows into your body, or lean against a wall. For moving shots, walk slowly with your knees slightly bent and the footage smooths out beautifully.
Finally, shoot more than you need. Record five extra seconds before and after every take. Those quiet seconds give you clean handles for cuts in the edit and save you from clips trimmed too tight.
Great gear never made a great video. Clean lens, locked focus, steady hands, and a few extra seconds: that is the whole recipe.
