How to Edit Your Videos So People Watch to the Very End
Most viewers decide in the first few seconds whether your video is worth their time, and editing is what convinces them to stay. You cannot film your way out of a slow edit, but you can edit almost any footage into something people finish.
Start with the payoff. Put your best moment, result, or boldest line right at the opening, then go back and show how you got there. Viewers who know what is coming will wait for it.
Cut ruthlessly. Remove every pause, breath, and repeated point. If a sentence does not add new information, it goes. Tight cuts feel energetic, and energy keeps thumbs from scrolling.
Add captions to every video. Most people start watching on mute, especially on phones. Clear, large captions let them follow along anywhere, and highlighted key words make important lines stand out.
Change what is on screen every few seconds. Cut to a close-up, show an example, drop in a photo, or zoom in slightly. Each visual change resets attention and makes the same talking shot feel new again.
End fast. Skip long goodbyes and tell viewers exactly what to watch or do next while your energy is still high.
Edit for retention first, and the views, subscribers, and sales will follow the watch time.
